MRZ Reading ≠ Document Verification
Here's an important distinction.
Reading an MRZ is not the same as verifying the authenticity of a document.
MRZ reading primarily extracts machine-readable information from the document.
For example:
Name
Document
Number
Nationality
Date
of Birth
Expiry
Date
But modern identity verification can go further.
For electronic passports and other chip-enabled documents, the information captured from the MRZ can be used to access and read data stored in the embedded electronic chip.
This creates a broader verification process:

Comparison & Verification
In other words, MRZ can be the starting point of a much broader identity verification process.
Understanding this distinction is important when evaluating identity verification solutions.
Reading
the document is one step.
Verifying the document is another.
And that's where technologies such as MRZ, NFC, biometrics, and document security features can work together.
