How is MRZ actually read?

There are different ways to capture information from an MRZ.

Traditionally, dedicated readers have used optical scanning methods where a document is physically positioned or passed through a reader.

Today, camera-based recognition provides another approach.

With camera-based MRZ reading:

1. Capture
A camera captures an image of the document.

2. Detection
The system identifies the MRZ area.

3. OCR Recognition
The characters are recognized and converted into digital data.

4. Data Processing
The extracted information can then be used by the identity verification system.

This approach is particularly useful for mobile and field operations, where carrying a dedicated document scanner may not always be practical.

The difference isn't simply about hardware.

It's about how identity data can be captured in the environment where verification actually takes place.
