What is MRZ?

You may have seen the two lines of letters and numbers at the bottom of a passport and etc — but what exactly are they?

MRZ stands for Machine Readable Zone.

It is a standardized area on passports, ID cards, visas, and other travel documents designed to be read automatically by machines.

Instead of manually entering information such as a name, document number, nationality, or date of birth, an MRZ reader can capture the information directly from the document.

This makes identity verification faster, more consistent, and less prone to manual data-entry errors.

Behind those seemingly simple lines is an internationally standardized system designed for automated identity processing.
