TD1, TD2, TD3, or MRV?

Not all MRZs look the same.

Depending on the type of document, the MRZ follows one of several standardized formats.

TD1 (Travel Document)

3 lines × 30 characters

Commonly used for machine-readable ID cards.

TD2

2 lines × 36 characters

Used for certain machine-readable travel and identity documents.

TD3

2 lines × 44 characters

The familiar format used on most machine-readable passports.

So when you see an MRZ beginning with P<..., you're looking at a TD3 passport MRZ.

And there's one more important format:

MRV

2 lines × 44 characters

Used for Machine Readable Visas.

Although TD3 and MRV both use 2 lines × 44 characters, their data structures and document types are different.

These formats define not only the number of lines and characters, but also where different types of information are placed.

The result?

Documents issued in different countries can still be processed by systems around the world using the same fundamental structure.

Different documents.
Different formats.
One standardized approach to machine readability.
